Attention Kansas Cattle Producers The Kansas Dept of Ag (KDA) plans to DISCONTINUE the reporting of feeder cattle, bred cows, slaughter cows and bulls in the state effective July 1, 2009. The KDA currently reports at Pratt Livestock Auction, Pratt and Farmer & Ranchers Livestock at Salina. Syracuse Livestock Auction at Syracuse and J.C. Livestock at Junction City were previously reported but discontinued do to budget problems several years ago. The feeder cattle weighted average reports generated at these auctions are a very valuable marketing tool that aids Kansas farmers, ranchers, feed yard managers, order buyers, packer buyers, insurance companies and financial agricultural lending institutions. These feeder cattle reports are used in numerous radio broadcasts by the AMS USDA Livestock & Grain Market News office in Dodge City. The reports are also made available on the USDA internet web-site. Industry members nationwide can use these reports as a marketing tool for buying and selling or placing cattle on feed in our state. This helps generate commerce and trade with our neighboring states. Also, the feeder steer prices from 650-850 lbs are used in CME Feeder Cattle Index. Another important fact, Kansas is the only state that reports bred cows and heifers on a regular basis. The KDA began reporting cattle auctions in October 1989. Since that time 9,301,690 head of cattle have been reported (these receipts do not include Winter Livestock Auction at Dodge City which is federally reported). If you want the state of Kansas to continue reporting these auctions and possibly expand the market reporting, please voice your concerns now.
